Philippine Idol, in the beginning…
July 30, 2006 by iamdoods
Sunday, 8 pm, July 30, 2006, we settled on our seats, swithching channels because PI did not start on the exact time. We watched Rated K for awhile, watching those ingenuious creations of humanity. I’m an avid fan of American Idol, and at that moment I have the power of the television because I have the remote.
Switching back and forth, and then at last, the familiar theme played with no pictures of recent idols, it’s the first time the Philipines had it’s franchise.
Days before, I was able to watched Loren Legarda’s Real Stories cover of the PI. As as the show progresses, my fellows asked why I knew most of the events, I told them about the Loren thing. But let us go back on what happened during the premiere.
Fortunately, it has the same flavor as the Idols were. Comic relief, drama, and suspense. I couldn’t help but notice that the sitting arrangement of the judges (Pilita, Maestro Ryan and Francis M.) looked like the arrangement of the American counterpart. It’s quite true that the Maestro is "mataray" at times. Could be like Simon Cowell.
The contestants are hilarious, much like in the States where there are weird people auditioning. Although I think the screening is not as rigid as AI because at times I think the looks give a heavier point. Like this one on a cowboy outfit, there were better than him, but as the judges says, his got the look.
Another girl with a thing for Francis, who has a towering height also was given a pass where there were others who where better.
One funny scene though was when a Half-Filipino-Caucasian guy came in front and sang a tagalog song without the accent. He sang Freddie Aguilar’s Anak and we were amaezed at his voice and diction. A girl sang an anime theme song, one from Voltes V. She’s got a raspy voice and cool green outfit. I thought she might be kicked out for singing such "not normal" song (which she said before she sang). But when Maestro asked her to sing a "normal" song, wow! that girl must be crazy for singing "not normal" songs. She’s got a powerful voice.
There were weird people everywhere, from outfit to gadgets. I never thought that Filipinos are also these crazy!
Next stop is Cebu! And I think I knew someone who auditioned. That’s this saturday and sunday.
Happy viewing!
FYI, the anime girl’s “normal song” was “moonraker” by shirley bassy. OST of the 007 movie of the same title.
